New Year's Resolution for Pool Owners

Around Christmas, with New Year’s parties and summer’s silly season, it’s easy to let pool maintenance fall to the wayside.

This year – why not make your New Year’s resolution to take better care of your pool and enjoy more safe swimming.

I hereby resolve to improve my pool maintenance.

Whether you’re fixing the gate, cutting back surrounding plants or buying new brushes, liners and skimmer socks, pool maintenance should be a top priority. It’s not only about keeping your pool clean and attractive to swim in – there are safety/health aspects too.

Your equipment should really be replaced every couple of years, but some of us wait a lifetime – are you still using the same brush head you bought 10 years ago? New brush heads will do a better job of cleaning – in less time and with less effort.

Are you sure your pool isn’t leaking? Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. During summer, many people assume that the water is evaporating, but a surface breach or a fault with the pump is just as common. Get this looked at sooner rather than later. It could save you a lot of money in the long run.

I hereby resolve to improve the balance of my pool water.

The best defence is a good offence.

Everything in your pool becomes more efficient with properly balanced pool water. You’re defending against algae outbreaks, it’s more comfortable to swim in, and your pool surface and equipment will last longer.

Every so often, it’s a good idea to take a water sample to your local BioGuard Approved Retailer.

I hereby resolve to improve pool safety.

How protected are you? Over years of use, a well-loved pool area will deteriorate.

Check your pool fence and gate to make sure it’s properly secured. Look over your pool cover for any holes or mould. And make sure your drains are filtering properly.

Also, speak to your kids about their safety around the water. Clearly explain the rules they need to follow and be vigilant with your supervision.

I hereby resolve to enjoy my pool more.

Don’t forget what the pool is for! Your pool is a great way to cool down, relax, socialise and exercise.

Start swimming more laps, hosting more pool parties and spending time with the kids.

For the majority of us, swimming is a seasonal activity – so make the most of it while you can!
